Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) which is also know as Hydroxycitrate comes from the more common Citric Acid which can be found in numerous tropical vegetation, including Garcinia Cambogia.
This fruit is pumpkin shaped that can vary in colour from light yellow to green and can even be found in a light reddish colour. The size of the Garcinia Cambogia fruit can vary from the size of an average orange up to the size of a grapefruit.
The rind of the Garcinia Cambogia fruit contains the Hydroxycitric Acid which is extracted and used as the primary ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia weight loss supplements. HCA has been shown to act as an appetite suppressant and also blocks the enzyme that is responsible for turning unused carbohydrates into fat in the body.
Hydroxycitric Acid HCA
In a study called “Hydroxycitric acid delays intestinal glucose absorption in rats,” which appeared online and also in the June 2102 edition of the American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, HCA was found to largely delay glucose levels in the body after a meal which in turn reduced the body’s insulin output. This delay is great news for dieters as the slower the glucose absorption rate the lower the glucose peaks in the body.
This study reinforces Dr. Arthur Agatston’s findings in his published book, ‘South Beach Diet’, which highlights the speed of sugar absorption is key for weight management and health and that as far as obesity is concerned, fast sugar is worse for you and slower is better. In fact this reduction in the absorption speed of sugars from food by HCA reduces the peaks and troughs of the body’s blood sugar level helping avoid the cravings that are often associated with a low blood sugar level that require a fast sugar or carbohydrate fix.
The most effective solution of HCA has been derived at circa 60% with many weight loss supplements advertising their own HCA % content starting from 50% through to 60%. Obviously 60% HCA is more effective as you are receiving a stronger concentration in the same capsule.
Garcinia Cambogia Dosage
For daily use as a weight loss supplement most capsules have been formulated to contain between 500mg to 750mg of Hydroxycitric Acid. Medical research tested via clinical trials have documented no known adverse effects from taking as much as 3,000mg to 4,000mg of HCA every day, usually before meal times to allow the fat blocking reaction to take place. So most supplements recommend taking between 1-2 capsules 3 times a day, so a 500mg capsule could be taken twice, 3 times a day at a daily dose of 3,000mg. Anything above this dosage does not increase it’s effectiveness, so it has been recommended by Dr. Oz amongst others that the maximum daily dosage people should take is 3,000mg.
PDH Natural Products Garcinia Cambogia Plus contains 60% HCA in a 500mg capsule, the directions for use are to take 1-2 capsules 3 x daily 30 minutes before a meal with an 8 ounce glass of water.
